Big disclaimer – This is not a “technically rigorous” session! Rather, let’s think of it as a general introduction to
several different barcode symbologies and
their applications. Not all
barcodes are created equal. What
unique attributes, capabilities (or limitations) make one symbology better
suited than another for a specific task? In
addition to the things that make them distinct, what attributes are shared
by almost all symbologies?
We will examine linear symbologies that
have been around for more than 30 years, still doing their jobs today. In many cases, we will see the truth of “different task;
different symbology.” Why?
We will look at the extensively implemented EAN/UCC suite of
symbologies. We will cover
two-dimensional symbologies, both “stacked” and “matrix”, and
we’ll point out the unique attributes of these newer-generation
symbologies that enable them to encode large amounts of data in a small
area.
Anyone
with responsibility for implementing a barcode system and specifying the
symbology or symbologies required for it will gain a good high-level
overview understanding of their task from this session.
Session
TB101 is the first of four related sessions which include (in sequence)

and TB103 – Scanning.
